Clean girl makeup, a modern relaunch of 'no-makeup-makeup', is a beauty trend that focuses on achieving a fresh, natural look through the use of makeup products that prioritise animal safety and eco-consciousness. In an era marked by heightened awareness of ingredient transparency and environmental responsibility, clean girl makeup embodies a minimalist and conscious aesthetic.
The cornerstone of clean girl makeup is the deliberate avoidance of cosmetics containing harmful chemicals and synthetic ingredients, coupled with a commitment to cruelty-free options. The emphasis lies on enhancing one's natural features while promoting skin health. This means prominently using organic, non-toxic, and eco-friendly cosmetics and skincare products.
A typical clean girl makeup routine includes a light, breathable foundation or tinted moisturiser for an even skin tone, complemented by subtle eye makeup featuring neutral eyeshadows, mascara, and well-groomed brows. Blush and bronzer are applied minimally to achieve a healthy, radiant complexion, and lip colours are chosen in nude or muted shades. This approach allows for a daily, environmentally conscious makeup routine that enhances natural beauty while contributing to a more sustainable beauty industry.
Sunscreen:
The La Roche-Posay sunscreen is one of my absolute favourite sun protection products out there, and it looks flawless under make-up which is prefect for the clean girl aesthetic. For a more affordable but completely fabulous alternative, the e.l.f. SKIN SPF is one you should definitely try out. As it contains a small tint, it provides you with the healthiest glow, and it can double as a primer, win-win!
Foundation/Tinted Moisturiser:
Using a tinted moisturiser or day cream instead of a foundation can feel lighter on the face and provide a 'like natural' skin look - which is one of the aims of clean girl makeup. The best tinted moisturiser on the market in my opinion is the Rare Beauty Positive Light Tinted Moisturiser which evens out your skin tone without becoming cakey and it can be layered if you wish to build up a bit of coverage. Another of my favourites and for a more everyday product is the 24 Hour Moisture Tinted Day Cream from Nivea which is brilliant if your looking for a quick step in your routine.
Blush:
Personally, blush and bronzing/contour are the most important steps in my makeup routine, as they can awaken my face with a soft glow and healthy rosiness. The Body Shop 'paint' colour is a wonderful product if you don't want to invest in lots of products as it multi-use function means it can double as a lip stain and eyeshadow as well as your blush. Yet, my holy grail blush product award goes to the e.l.f. Putty Blush, specifically in the shade Turks and Caicos, the colour works brilliantly with a tan and also in the winter to create a very natural rosy cheek.
Bronzing/Contour:
Mascara:
Mascara is the best thing, on its own to give your eyes a little something something or to finish off a look. For clean girl makeup, I tend to stick to lengthening mascaras, and this Hourglass Instant Extensions one is brilliant at it. For a softer look on those wanting to feel put together days, I lean towards a brown mascara, as the colour creates a softer but natural looking result - for this look the Stormy Eyes by Barry M hits the mark.
Lips:
Out of every lip liner I have tried and tested (and trust me there have been more than a few) I always come back to this one by Barry M. It is the creamiest, easy to apply and brilliantly pigmented lip liners, especially if you are testing the waters with makeup. My go to colours, the ones I normally have in my handbag, are Toast - a light brown shade, Chocolate - a dark brown shade, and Blush - a pinky neutral shade.
The Clinique Black Honey Almost Lipstick didn't go viral for no good reason, it is phenomenal. The pigment in the lippy adjusts to create a personal tone suited to your lips, and it does not miss. Clean girl makeup is finished off with a natural glossy and rosy lip, which is why this combination or one of these products alone is the final step the the routine. A lip oil, this pink tinted one from NYX, just competes the look to perfection.
